A MAN who hit a pedestrian in Newtown was chased down passers-by when he allegedly tried to flee the scene.

Chase down man who fled after hitting woman in wheelchair

About 11am on Tuesday, a Hino 300 Flat-top truck was travelling south on King Street when it hit a set of traffic lights and struck an 87-year-old woman in a wheelchair who was on the footpath. A 65-year-old woman was also hit.
The 34-year-old male driver of the truck allegedly fled the scene and was chased by several passers-by, who caught up with him on Wilson Street.
Police arrived soon after and arrested the man, who was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
The 87-year-old woman was also taken to hospital in a serious condition with suspected pelvic and limb fractures. The 65-year-old woman sustained minor bruising.
The man was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – driving in a manner dangerous, failing to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving, failing to stop and assist after impact causing injury and not giving particulars to injured person.
