Helpful hand to support for those with disability

SINGLE mums Rouba Osman and Neila El-Abed were dismayed at the lack of services for children with disability and so about a year ago, set about devising a plan of activity and goals for Neila’s child who has autism.

Word spread quickly and they were soon operating a support service for others from Rouba’s home before setting up an office in Tower Street, Panania, about five months ago and calling their service – Hand in Hand NSW.
With Rouba’s background in teaching and Neila’s in social work, they have since become a registered provider of services for children and adults with disability.
Now employing support workers, whose wages are covered by people accessing their services under their NDIS plans, Rouba says they can assist with nursing support, household tasks, carer respite, travel to appointments, accommodation, resume help, life skill development, a range of therapies, recreational activities and school holiday excursions.
“We work ‘hand in hand’ with allied health professionals to provide a growing range of NDIS capacity building supports,” Rouba said.
“Our aim is to offer fun, goal oriented community participation services to support you in building skills to participate in your community, and events and programs to improve your mental health.”
Though lucky to have strong links with other support organisations, Rouba says their goal is to set up a centre where they can offer the benefits of hydrotherapy, sensory rooms and more.
“We have helped over two dozen people with disability access their NDIS supports and have another 12 in the works,” Rouba said.
