Help sow seeds for greener future by planting tree to reach one million goal

EVERYONE IS being encouraged to dig deep and plant at least one tree to help green the city and do their bit for the environment.

The Everyone Plant One campaign aims to increase canopy cover to reduce heat, improve air quality, boost shade and contribute to the State Government’s target of planting one million trees across Greater Sydney by 2022.
Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, Group Deputy Secretary of Place, Design and Public Spaces, Alex O’Mara, said it’s an ambitious goal, but with more than 600,000 trees already in the ground, “we’re already more than halfway”.
“We are now calling on Sydneysiders to pick up a shovel and help us reach the finish line by planting a tree and registering it in support of the campaign,” she said.
“Trees make a huge difference to the environment and our lives. They provide shade, privacy, homes for wildlife and help to cool our communities. They also have immense benefits for our health and wellbeing, let alone adding beauty to a home.”
Ms O’Mara is encouraging everyone to get involved by planting a tree, big or small, but it’s important appropriate trees are chosen for the environment – and there are many from which to choose.
“Whether it’s in your backyard or on your balcony, every tree gets us one step closer to our goal,” Ms O’Mara said.
