Hawks swoop to claim next victory

IN another fan thriller, heavyweights Stanmore Hawks and SD Raiders went toe to toe with the league leaders scoring a 2-0 victory over the gallant Raiders in Round 22 of the NPL3.

In a contrast of styles, Stanmore played wide at every opportunity looking to utilise speedsters Peter Yannopoulos, Jonah Carragher, Angus Chance and Tim Wohlfiel, while the Raiders tried to unlock the Stanmore defence with their skilful midfield.
With minutes to go in an even first half, Carragher weaved his way into the penalty box only to be brought down. Marksman Jovan Blagojevic took care of the formalities for a 1-0 half time lead.
The second half was dominated by the Hawks with Alberto Parea and Nathan Niski playing tough in the middle and Sam Awad and Oliver Stickland allowing no space at the back.
Stanmore got their well-deserved second goal when Parea’s corner was met by the head of Connor Quilligan who buried the ball in the back of the net.
Experienced keeper Nick Carosi controlled his troops from the back ensuring a victory that brings the Hawks closer to a minor premiership.
This week’s mouthwatering clash against second place Bankstown City at Arlington Oval, could determine the championship.
