Hawks swoop in a stirring comeback to equal score

THE NPL 3 season kicked off with a classic 2-2 draw between last year’s Champions Stanmore Hawks and Gladesville Ryde Magic.

The match was played in contrasting styles with Stanmore playing their traditional free flowing football against an opponent that was content to punt the ball downfield to their experienced front men.
Stanmore created several chances in the first half but were thwarted by ageless goalkeeper Tohoroglou.
Gladesville only needed the one chance to take a 1-0 half time lead.
Stanmore continued their up tempo game in the second half with midfielders Lawrence Hanna and Connor Quilligan dominating.
Another save from a from Stanmore’s marksman Jovan Blagojevic, saw Gladesville counter punch and finish in style for what looked like a 2-0 winning lead.
Stanmore once more upped the tempo and showed why they topped the NPL3 last year with a stirring comeback.
Veteran Sam Awad and speedster Aydin Kumburlu entered the fray and made an immediate impact.
With 10 to go, Blagojevic finally beat the keeper with a clinical finish and two minutes later, Kumburlu weaved past three defenders and finished in style.
In the end, a fair result with both teams expected to challenge for semi-final spots this year.
