Hawks dive on prize for next victory thrill

DESPITE another convincing win for the Stanmore Hawks in the NPL 3 Round 14 match against Inter Lions at the weekend, the score could have been a lot more impressive.

With Inter Lions unbeaten in their last four, Stanmore started at pace, quickly nullifying Inters’ creative midfield with waves of attack, keeping their opponents on the back foot.

It didn’t take long for the Hawks to take a deserved lead when Connor Quilligan scored from a 20-metre angle.

When Jovan Blagojevic scored his 13th goal of the season heading in from an Alberto Parea Henche corner, Stanmore were 2-0 up within 10 minutes.

Stanmore could have been 4 or 5 in front by half time but for some poor finishing and a puzzling offside call.

The second half Stanmore onslaught continued with wing backs Tim Wohlfiel and Angus Chance making inroads and Nathan Niski adding penetration in the middle.

The final score would stay 2-0 but could have been a blow out after missed chances by Yannopoulos and Jonah Carragher who regularly tore the Inter defence to shreds.

Special mention to defenders Harry Brown and Oliver Stickland who have combined with keeper Nick Carosi to ensure Stanmore maintain the best defence in the league.

Next Saturday sees Stanmore take on Hawkesbury City at Arlington Oval.
