Hate mail over Chinese origin

A HATE-FILLED letter sent to Cumberland Councillor Kun Huang is under investigation by police.

Targeting Cr Huang because of his Chinese heritage, the vitriolic letter typed mostly in capitals was sent to him via the council and includes death threats and is riddled with swearing and expletives.
Admitting he was shocked when he read the letter which begins with an attack on his first name, it also includes accusations about Chinese people being responsible for the worldwide spread of Covid-19, that they “keep buying out Australia properties” and that they “stole all of our toilet paper and shipped it all to China”.
Cr Huang said while it was the first time he had experienced a racist attack of this kind, he felt the need to call it out publicly.
“I have worked for State and Federal MPs before and I know what ugly letters are like, but this is really the next level stuff. It was horrendous,” he said.
“I know racism does exist in our community. I know that a lot of people have experienced racism, but they don’t have the platform to voice their concerns.
“There are also a lot of people who actually will just shrug it off, and say ‘you know this is just a normal sort of activity’.”
However he said the type of racism in the letter was “simply unacceptable”.
Similar letters sent to a number of councillors of Chinese or Asian heritage on other Sydney councils are also under investigation.
