Halle soars to gold win

Snowboarder Halle McRae

DESCRIBED as graceful as an eagle soaring through the sky, Georges River Grammar (GRG) Year 9 student Halle McRae has won a gold medal at the Australian Interschools Snowsport Championships in Perisher.

The snowboarder, 14, also won gold in the Slopestyle event at the earlier State Interschools Snowspot Championships where she picked up a bronze in BoarderX and came fifth in the Giant Slalom events.
She was even invited to attend the Junior World Championships in Switzerland earlier in the year but at the time, was taking part in a training camp at Park City in Utah.
Selected for the Emerging Talent Program with Snow Australia which sees her train in Thredbo three days a week, Mum Amy says Halle is two rungs below Olympic level and is working on building up her international points so that she can be sponsored to compete in World Cups overseas.
“At the moment everything is parent funded but we’re hoping that through Snow Australia, she will be able to compete in Austria next year and at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in South Korea in January,” she said.
With Amy and Dad Lincoln keen snowboaders themselves, they introduced Halle and younger daughter Marley, 12, to the sport at a young age.
“They are both extremely talented,” Amy said.
“Even though my heart misses a beat sometimes when I see her flying so high in the air, and she’s had plenty of bumps and bruises along the way, I am incredibly proud of her achievements and how hard she works.”
Also accomplished academically, last year Halle came first in PE and Geography, was the GRG age champion in athletics and cross country and also plays touch footy for the school.
