Grand-final winning Bears invited to 30-year reunion

THE grand final win might have been back in 1991 but was so epic that the A-Grade winning Berala Bears side is planning to hold a 30-year reunion to commemorate the event in April.

The last of the team’s players still at the club who is the Under 18s coach and on the committee, Craig McGrath, says the match was memorable as it was the last one played with the two remaining clubs – Berala Bears and Enfield Federals – in the old Western Suburbs Association.
“We are the only club left now and play in the Canterbury and District Soccer and Football Association,” he said.
Joining as a seven-year-old and now a Life Member (need to have played 15 consecutive seasons), along with his Dad Brian, McGrath says it is a fantastic, family-friendly club and they’ve had much success with NRL players coming through the ranks.
“We are now urging players to register for the winter season which gets underway in the second week of April,” he said.
Club secretary Kylie Cogger says they are looking for players from Under 5s all the way up to A-Grade.
“We are keen to get a Womens side and are always looking for people willing to train as coaches, managers and first-aiders; we will cover all training and accreditation costs,” she said.
With no fees for the Under 5s-6s, it costs $30 for Under 12s and $80 for Under 13s to senior, including the Active Kids Vouchers.
Children will receive shirts, socks, shorts, training jersey, insurance, trophy and gift at the end of the season.
