Go dry in July to raise funds, find cure for cancer

WHEN Vanessa Sananikone’s father Van was diagnosed with a blood cancer during covid it was very hard on the family as they were not permitted to visit him in hospital while he was having treatment.

Feeling powerless, the Lakemba resident decided to take part in ‘Dry July’ last year as a way to do something tangible to help her father along with other cancer sufferers.
“I hit my fundraising goal of $800 in three days so just kept going,” she said.
“It was quite unexpected that I was ultimately able to raise $6,500 last year, thanks to friends and family, which felt great so I am doing the challenge again this year.
“Dry July means a lot to me this year as it marks one year of my Dad being in remission and I’m grateful to be able to celebrate this milestone with him.”
Vanessa said she would encourage others to take part.
“There are so many benefits like reducing your own cancer risk, improving your physical and mental well-being, better sleep and more focus plus you’ll lose weight,” she said.
Funds raised through the Dry July campaign are distributed to local and national cancer support organisations across Australia, with you able to nominate your beneficiary – Cancer Council, Leukaemia Foundation, Bowel Cancer Foundation, McGrath Foundation, Ovarian Cancer Australia or the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
