Give old sport shoes new life out of landfill

RESIDENTS are being urged to step up and get behind a new national recycling initiative that gives unwanted sports shoes new life as useful products like retail flooring, anti-fatigue mats, gym and playground surfaces.

With shoe components taking up to 1,000 years to breakdown, TreadLightly is on a mission to inspire consumers, retailers and manufacturers to take real action and reduce their environmental footprint by donating unwanted shoes at collection points, such as JD Sports, Rebel and Hype DC in Merrylands and New Balance and Intersport in Auburn, to be recycled.
It has been working closely with Australia’s leading sport and active lifestyle retailers and has recycled 400,000 pairs of shoes since the program first started, keeping 200,000kg of shoes out of landfill.
