Girls start building their future

HELPING to build career options, Bankstown Girls High School Year 10 students got a taste last week of what it’s like to work in the property industry during the ‘Girls in Property’ program.

Run by the Property Council of Australia, the program encourages greater female participation and helps create a pipeline of talent for the growing industry.
The students gain industry insights, hear from women and men industry leaders about what a job in property looks like and the raft of careers available.
There were 16 students from Bankstown selected for the program and put into teams of four.
Each team was required to develop a project based on one of four areas – a residential development based on a remote Aboriginal community, a retail re-development based on Bankstown Central, an industrial warehouse re-development and a school community development.
The girls delivered their projects to Year 10 peers and three judges – Property Council of Australia’s Kelly Jones, NSW Dept of Education Schools Infrastructure officer Claire Crook and Bankstown Girls High Principal Suada Bilali.
After a lengthy adjudication, the winning team was announced comprising students Prahbleen Issar, Haiqa Mustafa, Hawraa Fneish and Natalie Chamma who delivered the residential development.
“Never underestimate how much effort many people put in for the smallest detail,” said Haiqa who was on the winning team.
“Communication and being able to clearly say what you are thinking makes doing projects much easier.”
Mrs Bilali said: “My students never fail to amaze me. I am so proud of each team’s efforts. Their project ideas were of high quality, demonstrating well thought out ideas, collaboration and problem-solving skills. They would all flourish in the property industry. Thank you to Teacher Science Anna Edwards for facilitating the program.”
The winning team heads into the city tonight to take part in the final competition.
