Girl wins ‘Top 50’ Operation Art selection to aid sick in hospital

OUT of nearly a thousand entries across NSW, Lidcombe Public School student Victoria Park has had her painting, ‘Rubber Duckling’ selected in the Top 50 in Operation Art 2022.

On exhibition at the Armory Gallery until last Sunday, the Top 50 are now on a regional tour before making their way to a permanent home at Westmead Children’s Hospital.
The Operation Art initiative encourages students to create art pieces to cheer up sick children in hospital.
Lidcombe Public School Principal Matt Lewis said the school community was very proud of Victoria and it was her most recent achievement in a long list of accomplishments.
“She is an amazing all-round student and also manages to fit in a lot of activities outside of school too,” he said.
“To have the time and patience to complete an artwork of this high calibre for Operation Art is extremely impressive and we could not be more proud.”
Saying creating art is her thing to do, Victoria added: “I wondered whether a real duck would recognise a rubber duck and care for it? I feel lucky to be able to express my talents but also creating art makes me calm and happy.”
Operation Art Officer at the NSW Department of Education’s Arts Unit, Heidi Windeisen, says the exhibition is not only a great way to showcase the spectacular talents of NSW students, but also proves the importance of art as a healing tool.
“Teachers know they can inspire their students to create artworks for sick children through Operation Art, to give purpose to their work and understand that visual arts can promote a feeling of joy to those who spend much of their time in hospitals,” she said.
