Girl, 9, next to take on world

SEFTON Golf Club’s Eden Kelly, 9, has won the Jack Newton Junior Tournament in the U10 Girls category and qualified to take on the world’s best in the International Junior Classic in the Hunter Valley in October.

Interested in sport from an early age, Eden tried cricket, tennis and gymnastics but golf won hands down, according to Mum Anita.
“She’s been going into tournaments since she was six-years-old and it’s the competition that drives her,” Anita said.
“We try to go to Sefton Golf Club every weekend because she loves it so much there, she knows the course and what to expect.
“It was very muddy at Linwood on the day of the Jack Newton Junior Tournament, an 18-hole, three-day championship which she won by 20 shots on the last day and as well as the trophy, scored new golf balls, hat and golf bag.”
Anita said Sefton Golf Club members had been very encouraging on Anita’s journey.
“She really loves the staff in the pro shop there and has become friends with all of them,” she said.
“I would recommend other parents to get the child to give golf a go, it’s one of the best things we did.”
