Giants toppled by rivals

IN devastating form right from the first whistle, the Melbourne Vixens proved they are firmly in the premiership contention with a 66-57 win against Giants Netball at the QuayCentre at Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday.

Fight to death but couldn’t break momentum

The Giants were in the contest throughout most of the opening quarter, but a seven-goal Vixens’ run saw them take a 19-11 lead into the first break.
Kiera Austin was introduced into goal attack for the Giants but unfortunately for the home side it did little to alter the visitors’ momentum.
The Vixens’ lead quickly blew out to double digits, hitting 12 as they led 36-24 by half-time.
Halfway through the third quarter, the Giants finally started to click, cutting the margin to 10 goals and prompting a Vixens timeout.
In a bid to turn things back in their favour, the Giants changed things up bringing Caitlin Bassett back on in place of Jo Harten, but it had little effect, with the Vixens sparking another seven-goal run to extend their advantage to 17.
Finding some momentum in the last 15 minutes, the Giants managed a dominant 19-14 quarter, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a comfortable Vixens’ win.
The national competition takes a break for five weeks for the World Cup, with Giants players Bassett and Jamie-Lee Price representing Australia and Harten playing for the English Roses.
The Giants next game is away in Melbourne against the Collingwood Magpies on July 28.
