Giants start with a bang

GIANTS Netball have christened their new home at Ken Rosewell Arena with their second win of the national netball competition.

Fresh from a round one victory over the Adelaide Thunderbirds, the Giants scored a comfortable 66-54 win over the Collingwood Magpies in their first game at home in 623 days because of the pandemic.
Unfortunately for the Giants, three players – Kiera Austin, Kristiana Manu’a and Amy Parmenter – were sidelined with illness or injuries but their respective understudies stepped up with barely a hitch.
While Sophie Dwyer in goal, wing attack Maddie Hay and defender Amy Sligar have less than 20 games’ experience between them, they played with impressive poise.
Dwyer looked instantly comfortable in the mostly homegrown line-up, shooting 23 goals at 74 per cent accuracy while her circle partner Jo Harten shot 37 goals.
With 34 circle feeds, Australian Diamonds midcourter Jamie-Lee Price was at the heart of the game as she battled it out with Magpie Ash Brazill.
“We were lucky to have a good start to the game,” Price said.
“Last season was really disappointing and we’ve really wanted to enjoy ourselves this year.
“Having a good start to the year helps and we’ve put ourselves in a good position.”
