Giant effort but team toppled in lion den

THE GWS Giants have been toppled 19.15 (129) to 10.5 (65) by the Brisbane Lions in their Saturday clash at The Gabba.

A roaring opening term, in which the Lions kicked 6.4 to the Giants’ one goal, proved the difference in the contest as Leon Cameron’s side limped out of the blocks and ended up paying the price.
The Giants got on the board late in the first term and kicked another couple of goals early in the second term but they were matched at every stage by the Lions who refused to let their lead whittle, with the margin 42 points at the main break.
While the Giants got on the board first in the third term with a goal to Jeremy Finlayson, it quickly became clear the Lions were not going to let their lead slip any further.
They’d finish the third term having kicked four goals to the Giants’ one and in the final term continued to romp to the finish line.
However, the undersized, unheralded GWS backline can be proud of itself. Missing tall timber Sam Taylor (ankle), Phil Davis (calf) and Lachie Keeffe (knee), they held up well.
Jack Buckley was strong on Joe Daniher, Matt Buntine did well against Dan McStay after a slow start, and Nick Haynes fought hard against Eric Hipwood. Sam Reid had the unenviable task of chasing Charlie Cameron.
The Giants will enjoy a bye before their game against North Melbourne in Round 13.
