Get taste of tour guide

TASTE Tours, a cultural food tour company based in Sydney’s South West, has partnered with TAFE NSW to provide refugees and new migrants with a tour guide training program.

Migrants upskill in training plan

The eight week course, delivered at TAFE NSW Bankstown, has seen 20 hopeful tour guides undertake a Statement of Attainment in Leading Tour Groups, learning how to lead tour groups and prepare and present tour commentary.
The students completing the program come from Iraq, the Philippines, China and Libya.
For most students, this is their first opportunity to undertake training with a view to gain employment in Australia.
Taste Tours will offer students who successfully complete the course with the opportunity to join their team, gaining employment as a tour guide.
Taste Tours Director Lesley Unsworth says: “The power of the program is that it’s not just refugees; it’s local young people and new migrants – and no one is excluded when it comes to recruitment opportunities.”
The funding for this program came from a Department of Home Affairs Community Grants Hub Fostering Integration Grant.
Chris, one of the guides-in-training says of the group tour around Lakemba during Ramadan: “I’m glad I was able to take this tour before my TAFE NSW exam. It helped me to relax before the exam and see what tour guides do in their day to day job. It was a new experience that I enjoyed and I learned a lot. I also met a lot of new friends.”
