Gear up to boost safety skills riding a motorbike

RIDING a motorbike is truly one of life’s greatest joys, but it can also be fraught with danger as riders account for 14 per cent of all crash-related fatalities even though they only comprise three per cent of vehicles on the road.

In the Cumberland City Council area, motorcycle crashes represented 9.7 per cent of all casualties. Over the last three years, there were two motorcycle fatalities and 135 serious injuries. Eighty-six per cent of all motorcycle crashes were multi-vehicle crashes and 14 per cent comprised single-vehicle crashes.
To avoid becoming one of the statistics, new and experienced riders are invited to join a free workshop and casual discussion on popular topics to help reduce risks and make every ride more enjoyable.
It’s on offer at the Motorcycle Accessories Superstore, 321 Parramatta Road, Auburn, on Thursday, April 28, 6-8pm, with organiser and former riding instructor David Tynan saying its important for all riders to keep reviewing their traffic management skills including cornering, group riding and better following distances.
“No one ever becomes a specialist at this, it doesn’t matter how many years you’ve had on the road you can still pick up survival tips and tricks from others,” he said.
“We are very passionate about riding and helping people do better on the road. There’ll be a few old hands in attendance who will share their experiences and help you avoid making silly mistakes.”
