GDSFA Football Operations Manager Rosanna Lentini says the purpose of the program is to introduce young participants as ‘game leaders’ officiating the Mini Roos and perhaps go on to complete their level four course and become fully fledged referees.
“There are a number of benefits to completing the Cadet Referees Program,” she said.
“Learning the laws of the game will help you to becoming a better player as well as a match official.
“It keeps you active and involved and is an opportunity to make friends plus anyone can do it; children need to be aged at least 11 but it’s on offer to any age group above that.”
Rosanna said it was also fantastic for the youngest players and would provide them with a better game day as the cadet refs focus on encouraging them, rather than penalising them for doing the wrong thing.
“It also helps to develop life skills and confidence and improves fitness levels without the bumps and bruises that players sustain,” she said.
“You’ll get the best seat in the house too.
“So whether you want to give back something to the sport you love, earn some extra pocket money or have ambitions of becoming a full referee at 13, this is where you can start.”
