Garbo arrest over hit and run

A GARBAGE truck driver from Lakemba has been charged with manslaughter after he allegedly hit and killed a pedestrian in Sydney’s CBD last Wednesday.

About 1.30am, emergency services were called to Central Street in Sydney’s CBD, after the body of a 21-year-old man was found on the footpath.
A crime scene was established and examined by specialist forensic officers, with inquiries indicating the man had been struck by a garbage truck.
Following inquiries, police stopped a truck on Darlinghurst Road, Kings Cross, about 4.30am and arrested the 51-year-old driver.
He underwent mandatory testing before being charged with manslaughter, fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, dangerous driving occasioning death-drive manner dangerous, negligent driving (occasioning death), improperly interfere with corpse or human remains and not reverse vehicle safely.
Police will allege in court that the driver reversed the truck at speed, striking the pedestrian and knocking him down.
The driver got out, allegedly moved the man off the roadway without rendering assistance or contacting emergency services, then drove from the scene.
