Frustrated Hawks swoop to equalise

THOUGH on the front foot for most of the game, Round 15 of NPL 3 resulted in a frustrating 1-1 draw for Stanmore Hawks when they took on Hawkesbury at Arlington Oval at the weekend.

From the outset, Stanmore dominated with Nathan Niski and Alberto Parea creating gaps for front men Peter Yannopoulos, Jonah Callagher and new man Fergus Worrall.
Hawkesbury played long to their Spanish imports who were getting behind the Stanmore defence early on. One such run resulted in a free kick just outside the box for Veliz Coccolo to dispatch with precision.
Stanmore continued to pressure but could not get the equaliser before half time.
It took only three minutes of the second half for central defender Oliver Stickland to restore parity when a bullet header from a corner thundered into the back of the net.
The rest of the half saw the Hawkesbury goal mouth resemble a shooting gallery but the Hawks could not score the winner with shots going wide and high on a regular basis.
When substitute Sam Awad hit the post twice in the last few minutes, you knew it was not going to be Stanmore’s day.
Stanmore will rue their missed chances and will look to bounce back next Saturday at Arlington Oval against Granville.
