Friendly reptiles slip into class to amaze students

THERE was a Star Tortoise, a Burmese Python, a baby American Alligator, a Pygmy Bearded Dragon, a Cane Toad and even a friendly Blue Tongue Lizard among others waiting to greet Year 7 students to class at Georges River Grammar earlier this month.

The Reptile Incursion lesson which is part of the science syllabus, was brought to life thanks to the visit from Australian Reptile Park presenter Mike and his scaly friends.
A school spokesperson said the students loved the hands-on experience.
“One was a little worried about the snakes but was very happy to hold the gentle Blue Tongue,” she said.
“They enjoyed getting up close and personal with all the reptiles and got plenty of tips, for example, what to do if you get bitten by a snake – no more sucking out the venom but instead, tightly wrapping up the whole limb so the poison doesn’t spread until help arrives.”
Wise advice considering that Australia is home to 20 of the 25 most venomous snakes in the world, including all of the top 11; the world’s most venomous snake, the Inland Taipan, is found nowhere else on Earth.
