Fresh learning approach at onsite school supermarket

STUDENTS at Broderick Gillawarna School, are learning real-world skills thanks to the opening of a mini Woolworths supermarket on site.

Supporting the special needs youth, the store has been established to simulate the operations of an actual supermarket.
There’s baskets for fresh food, shelving, ticketing and Woolworths uniforms students can wear to create an immersive educational experience.
Using Fujitsu registers, students can also learn to scan grocery items and handle money when they process sales.
BGS Fresh Food, as the students named their new store, has been brought to life over the last few weeks through a partnership with the Woolworths Technology team, the Woolworths Construction team and Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand.
Nearby Woolworths Revesby staff helped stock shelves in readiness for the opening.
Principal Jo-Anne Gardiner says students are able to experience a supermarket environment and develop real world skills such as calculating prices, shelf stacking, communication and teamwork.
“It’s a great asset that will assist us in developing students’ independence in readiness for when they finish school,” she said.
