Stepping On is designed to increase awareness of hazards to prevent falls and arm seniors with the confidence and independence to live freely.
Cumberland City Mayor Lisa Lake said that recent data has suggested that Cumberland has one of the highest fall related incidences in Western Sydney, “so this program will really help our residents as we try to limit these falls”.
“Cumberland Council values our senior residents and it’s important that we provide programs and services to ensure our oldest residents live active lifestyles, feel safe, included and are being looked after,” she said.
The program which is being rolled out in partnership with Western Sydney Local Health District has been developed by Australian occupational health therapists and covers a range of topics including identifying hazards around the home and in public places, building strength and balance exercises, medication and treatments, and how to bounce back after a fall.
Over the course of seven weeks, the weekly sessions will run for two hours, followed by a group catch up session.
The Stepping On Program will start in February with a second program in May.
