Free help so firms can get cyber safe

THE Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) receives about 4,400 cyber crime reports and responds to 168 cyber security incidents on average each month, with numbers expected to rise in the lead-up to Christmas.

However, there are simple steps small business can take to reduce their cyber crime risk.
NSW Business Connect and Cumberland Council will help get small businesspeople started on their cyber security journey at a free webinar next month.
You will learn about the key areas of threat including malicious software, scam emails (phishing) and malware plus software considerations and people and procedures.
“You don’t have to be a tech expert as it’s not rocket science just good housekeeping,” says webinar presenter Babette Bottin who is the founder of DAS Insure.
An international expert for trade credit solutions, Babette is passionate about the benefit of risk management and will show participants the free resources available to get started.
“I recommend starting with government recommended resources as they are free, Australia specific and all about empowering the small business owner,” she said.
Participants will leave the course with: An understanding of the ACSC Small Business Cyber Security Guide; a checklist that empowers them to implement a set of cyber safety measures; a roadmap to Australian Alert Services; and how to report a scam.
One-on-one sessions can also be booked if participants want to learn more or have had an experience that needs investigating.
To book your attendance at the ‘Cyber Security Tips for Business’ on Thursday, December 9, 10am-12pm, go to cumberland.nsw.gov.au or call 8757 9000.
