Hampers are packed with dry goods such as rice, oil, tinned goods and long-life milk, as well as a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, and OzHarvest NSW State Manager Richard Watson said that the free service came at an important time.
“Granville has one of the highest JobSeeker recipient rates in the country,” he said.
“With JobKeeper coming to an end, and JobSeeker payments reduced in March, we identified this as an area of need as many people will be hit hard by the changes in benefits.
“When people know there is a regular supply of fresh, nourishing food – it’s one less thing for them to worry about.”
Open at 3-5 Bridge Street every Thursday from 11am-2pm to anyone in need of food relief, identification is not required however recipients are required to check in via the NSW Government Covid-check-in service as they enter the hall.
Mr Watson added that the Granville Hamper Hub’s location opposite the train station was secured for them by State MP for Granville, Julia Finn, who also provided the team with a better understanding of the area and connected them with several local community organisations.
Funded by the NSW Government to provide emergency food relief during the pandemic, the Granville Hamper Hub is open until the end of June.
