Free activities for family to aid physical, mental health

RESIDENTS have been encouraged to get active with a series of free activities and services for children and adults.

Cumberland City Council has begun rolling out the program at community centres, which includes basketball, yoga, soccer, martial arts, tutoring and homework help, knitting, gardening and more.
The program will also see council parenting with Reclink Australia, which provides evidence-based sport and recreation programs to disadvantaged people to create socially inclusive, life-changing opportunities, to present an exciting and engaging Martial Arts program and a Dance Fit Class aiming to inspire participants to push their boundaries and try out fresh techniques, all within a secure and welcoming atmosphere.
Mayor Lisa Lake said the programs were an important way to engage with residents and create social cohesion and community spirit.
“The council is committed to offering free activities and programs to families and residents to encourage and promote physical and mental health wellbeing and social interaction,” she said.
“Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicates that monthly household spending has increased by six percent, and at least 22 percent of households in Cumberland are considered low-income households so we know that there will be some families that are struggling to afford to enrol their children into extra-curricular activities.
“These programs mean children won’t have to miss out on learning new skills, making new friends and engaging with our community.”
Selected programs will available at Auburn, Berala and Guildford until Friday, September 22.
