‘Fred’s Big Run’ to help restore vision

LOOKING to kickstart his pre-season soccer training, Merrylands resident Chris Nofal saw a notice online for ‘Fred’s Big Run’ and thought he would give it a shot.

An initiative of the Fred Hollows Foundation, the Big Run requires participants to take part in a running or walking challenge throughout August and collect sponsorship dollars for their efforts – all to help restore the sight of the needlessly blind.
Choosing to take part in the 50km, 100km or 150km category, participants can limit their efforts to a few times a week or use the challenge as the perfect excuse to enjoy some fresh air and sun everyday.
“I was running twice a day anyway to build up my fitness for soccer and I thought why not take it a step further, raise some cash and help make someone else’s life better,” Chris said.
“I’m on the lookout for sponsors and if any readers can donate a couple of dollars that would be wonderful.”
Likewise Auburn resident Serraa Alsamail is on the hunt for sponsors after deciding to take part in Fred’s Big Run.
“I know someone who has vision issues and see how it impacts on their life in ways that we all take for granted,” she said.
“So I thought I would get involved to help and even if that means helping just one person, then I will be very happy.”
Discovering some picturesque walking tracks around Duck River, Seraa said it was also a great opportunity to get fit.
“I’ve really been enjoying the winter sunshine,” she said.
