‘Fred’s Big Run’ sponsors urged

Tony McCartan

WHEN Revesby’s Pabi Subba came across a Facebook post promoting Fred’s Big Run – a running or walking challenge to raise money for the Fred Hollows Foundation – he had no hesitation in signing up for the challenge which takes place throughout August.

Pabi Subba, Bill Hantzis and Kate Harris are looking for sponsors for their efforts in Fred’s Big Run to help those who are needlessly blind.

A resident here for 25 years, Pabi was born in Nepal and knew of the great efforts Fred had gone to opening the country’s first eye hospital.
“I’ve always been a big fan of Fred and I thought it was the perfect opportunity putting my running skills to use in Kelso Park,” Pabi said.
“I’ve already raised about $1,200 and hope to raise more.”
Panania’s Tony McCartan is up for the challenge too after being a regular City to Surf participant raising funds for charity.
“It’s great to be out in the fresh air and exercising for a purpose plus it’s a way to continue the legacy of Fred and honour his family,” Tony said.
Also signing up, Milperra’s Kate Harris has been enjoying her walk up to the golf course and a few laps around the pond.
“The 150km goal is quite achievable when you spread it out over a month and it’s for a wonderful cause, although I could do with some more sponsors,” she said.
Belmore’s Bill Hantzis is taking part due to a personal connection with Fred’s work.
“My father needed a lot of cataract work and was blind before his passing so I wanted to put my efforts into this good cause,” he said.
“I’ve been on a health kick and so I’m also hoping this challenge will take it up a notch.”
