Fourth generation of veggie retailers win ‘Fresh Award’

DID you know that King Edward potatoes are best for roasting, Dutch cream are more buttery and ideal for mashing and purple potatoes help those with high blood pressure.

Facts like these and a deep knowledge of the ‘stock exchange for fruit and veg’ has seen Yep Lum & Co win their first award – Paddy’s Choice Fresh – in Sydney Markets’ Fresh Awards.
In business for eight decades and based at Flemington Markets, it was started by Henry Lum Yip in 1940.
With the family’s fourth generation now involved, it is run by Henry’s sons, Neuman and Roger, Neuman’s wife Eileen and the brothers’ children and grandchildren.
Eileen said it felt very special winning their first Fresh Award.
“It’s nice to receive recognition as we are here six days a week and customer service is key,” she said.
“We have about 12 different lines of potato that you don’t get in a supermarket as well as ginger, garlic, pumpkins and onions.
“I spend a lot of time with customers teaching them about what potatoes they should be using in different dishes and am always happy to do so.
“We would like to thank everyone who voted for us.”
Other Flemington-based winners included Lemdell Pty Ltd who was announced as Wholesaler of the Year and Anthony’s Pets won the Paddy’s Choice Retail Award.
