The centenary committee, led by Deputy Principal Eleni Mavridis-Kontakos, had spent considerable time collecting memorabilia which was clearly enjoyed by past students as fond memories flooded back.
Year 1 student in 1949, Janice Teefy McDougall recalled those years as being wonderful with students having respect for the teachers “who treated us very well”.
“I made lifelong friends and still keep in touch,” she said.
Former student Brian Shea said: “It’s been great looking at the photo memories, having been here in the 70s; it just seems impossible that was over 50 years ago, none of us ever looked that far ahead.”
The main hall featured artwork produced by present students – from Preschool to Year 6, with the theme ‘We are Punchbowl’.
Following welcomes, speeches and reminiscences, student groups entertained with performances rehearsed over several weeks.
Principal Donna McGeary said Punchbowl Infants School opened in 1922 and the Primary School in 1928.
“Turn the clocks forward 100 years and our families are still our biggest supporters,” she said.
“The relationship between home and school is what makes Punchbowl so special. We have over 30 language groups represented and we champion our community’s diversity every day.
“We are very proud of the important role Punchbowl Public School has had in our community over the years and it’s a privilege to be Principal.”
Former students back in class to celebrate school centenary
