Though Thomas hasn’t played professionally since 2017 and just heading to BCG once a fortnight to have a hit, he said he was thrilled to be accepted into the competition since “the competitive juices are still flowing”.
“Golf is more of a hobby to me now as I have a young family and didn’t want to be an absentee dad on tour for 15 to 20 weeks of the year as a professional golfer,” he said.
“I’m really enjoying having a hit at BCG with some of the boys I grew up with; it’s a wonderful club and the Pro, Lee Hunt, is fantastic.
“The course is always amazing to play on too, a real credit to the greenkeeper team. It’s always a pleasure to play there.”
BCG General Manager David Renehan says the club is definitely enjoying a purple patch.
“We’re jumping out of our skins at the moment since golf was one of the few sports spared by Covid,” he said.
“We’ve played all the way through and there’s a lot more social players on the course.
“We have been concentrating on the main grades as with the PGA tournament, and starting to introduce our players with rankings; all in all, the season has been very strong.”
Hunt agrees: “Our participation is up 40 per cent; golf is booming. It’s great physical exercise and also perfect for mental health and you get to do it all outdoors, what more could you ask?”
