Football referees to get bonuses

THE ‘pocket money’ paid to football referees is set to substantially increase with Bankstown Football introducing an incentive program to reward those who officiate the most games with bonus payments on top of their match fees.

Along with planning a dedicated season for girls, General Manager Leanne Millar said the Association was thinking outside the box to try and attract more match officials to support the growing number of participants.
As well as earning bonuses based on the number of games they officiate, those who referee a minimum of 40 games will be entered into a draw to win an extra $1,000 at the end of 2023.
“It’s a really big push from our end because, without referees, we can’t have a game,” Millar said.
“Aside from these incentives, we won’t be charging referees registration and we will provide free training.”
Bankstown District Referees (BDR) inaugural coach Tony Walsh said some motivated refs were already earning between $150-$200 every weekend without the bonuses.
“This is a great opportunity for anyone over the age of 13 to get more involved in the sport and earn some money,” he said.
In addition to this, Bankstown Football is also looking to grow the number of female players at its clubs.
Millar said the Association had plans to begin running a girls-only Under-8 and Under-9 competition.
“We’re looking to ensure our clubs can provide a girls-only environment at a younger level leading to increased female participation across NSW,” she said.
Those interested in becoming a referee and earning money as soon as the season gets underway in early March, should book into the first Level 4 Course of the year taking place on Saturday, February 4, 9am-3.30pm.
