IMPACTING Marrickville and Tempe, higher than normal tide is expected on the Cooks River this week, with minor flooding forecast.
The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted that the Cooks River will likely peak near the minor flood level (1.30m) at Tempe Bridge at around 8pm tonight.
It is expected the following areas may be impacted by dangerous floodwaters: Tempe (Holbeach Avenue, Bay Street, Old Street and Young Street); Marrickville (Dibble Avenue, Illawarra Road, Wharf Street, Riverside Crescent, Thornley Street, Hampden Avenue, Corner of Myrtle Street and Carrington Rd, Renwick Street – east side – from Carrington Rd, Cary Street, corner Carrington Road and Richardson Crescent).
Low lying areas such as parks and open spaces may be flooded.
What you need to do:
• Residents and businesses along streams and creeks should take immediate precautions to protect life and property.
• Never drive, walk or ride through flood water – this is the main cause of death during floods as water may be deeper or faster flowing and may contain hidden branches or debris.
• If you are caught in your home during a flash flood, shelter in the highest place. Do not enter flood waters.
• Keep a close watch on the situation, stay tuned to local radio or TV, alert your neighbours (particularly older people), check animals and livestock and reconsider travel plans.
• Follow the advice of emergency services.
• Stay clear of fallen trees and powerlines as well as creeks, drains, causeways, gutters and
streams.
• If flood waters rise around your car, get out and move to higher ground.
• For emergency help in floods and storms, call the NSW State Emergency Service on 132 500. In life threatening situations, call triple zero (000) immediately.
