First Winter Sleepout at school thrill

ABOUT 120 students (pictured) in Years 3-6 from St Peter Chanel Catholic Primary School (SPC) in Regents Park, got a taste of life on the streets last week and raised $2,179, taking part in the school’s first ‘Winter Sleepout’.

SPC Religious Education Coordinator Andrea El-Tahan said the students were excited to wear their pyjamas to school and bring cardboard in order to make a ‘homeless shelter’.
“We held lots of activities reflecting homelessness and only offered a humble dinner of soup, a roll and water, to make it more authentic,” she said.
“We were pleased that we only ran the initiative from 3.30-7pm on the day because by then, most students were complaining of being tired and hungry after their big day but it was exactly the reaction we were after as it raised their awareness of the plight of the homeless.
“We raised the funds through gold coin donations as well as through our Vinnies fundraising page and want to thank parents and the community for their generosity.”
