First players among crowd at soccer club’s 70th celebration

THERE were the Inaugurals, the Invincibles, the oldest, the youngest and everyone in between when North Bankstown Soccer Club celebrated its 70th Anniversary at Bankstown Sports Club on Saturday night.

Attracting over 150 former players from across Australia, the event has been described as a spectacular night of fun and celebration.
Club President Mark Kearns said the five men who were among the Inaugurals, or those who played the year after the club was founded in 1954, were present on the night.
He said (pictured cutting the anniversary cake) John Cleverly, Ken Woodbine, Les Colley, Malcolm McGregor and John Engisch (Torch Publishing Chairman) had stayed friends for seven decades and had never missed a reunion.
“Along with the return of the Invincibles, our undefeated team for eight years and the NSW Champion of Champions for two years in a row in the 1970s, we had our oldest ex-player Les meet our youngest player, Lucas Bou-rizk, 5, whose father George also played and is now his coach,” Kearns said.
“Special guest was Page McGregor, who along with sister Racine, has represented Australia in rugby union and league but got their start here, spending the first five years of their careers at North Bankstown.”
With the anniversary cake adorned with 120 red and white (club colours) cupcakes, the night also featured raffles, dancing, award presentations and much more.
“We thank Bankstown Sports for sponsoring such a special night,” Kearns said.
