First cherries of season sell for $70,000

IN a juicy showcase, the first cherries of the season have gone under the hammer, raising $70,000.

Over the last 42 years, Flemington-based Sydney Market’s Cherry Auction has raised more than $1 million for Australian charities, with this year’s efforts going to support the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation and the Kids Cancer Centre Regional Oncology Outreach Program.
The title of ‘Cherry King’ for 2023 has gone to Narinder Singh Badhan from QE Food Stores, who bid $50,000 and an additional $20,000 was donated by Sydney Markets Credit Service.
Sydney Markets Foundation CEO Meegan George said the Cherry Auction was always an annual highlight on the Sydney Markets calendar and the fantastic result was testament to the generosity of the fresh produce community.
“The auction gala night was a well-deserved celebration and chance for our community to get together and celebrate the year that has been and mark the start of the stone fruit season,” she said.
