First badminton contest success

ORGANISING their first sporting event together, the Auburn Brothers Club and Indian Youth Committee of Australia (IYCA) joined forces last month to host a badminton tournament at the NBC Silverwater centre.

Auburn Brothers Club president and tournament manager Naveed Mohammed said the inaugural Precision Badminton Cup 2020 was aimed at bringing together participants from the Indian sub-continent and to encourage sports in the community.
He said 16 teams took part in the mens doubles knockout championship and they hoped to expand it to a mixed competition next time around.
“The event went through smoothly and successfully and everyone played well and demonstrated good sportsmanship,” he said.
“The only unfortunate thing was we couldn’t have our families come and watch us play, but hopefully in the future we will be able to change that.
“The winners of the tournament were Imran Khan and Mohsin Zayyad. The runners up were Omer Yafai and Mian Rashid.
“Both the teams and the volunteers including Muzammil Siddiqui and Abdul Quadeer Syed who acted as event co-ordinators, were awarded with trophies and certificates of recognition respectively which were presented by Shamim Khan of MSK Events.
“The overwhelming response from the people in Auburn will act as a motivation for us to keep on conducting tournaments like this to encourage sports among the communities in area.”
