Feast of tips on Edible Garden Trail

IF you’ve ever wondered just what’s involved in growing your own food or are interested in keeping chickens, crop swapping, native bees, worm farms and more, there’ll be lots of passionate gardeners ready to share their knowledge on this Saturday’s Edible Garden Trail.

You’ll see the gardeners nurturing the last of their pumpkins and tomatoes and preparing cabbage and broccoli seedlings ready for Autumn planting.
As part of the trail, Merrylands and Wentworthville Community Gardens will be open as well as the option to visit over 40 other gardens.
The mission of the team of volunteer coordinators is to encourage and inspire growing edible produce in urban gardens and public spaces across Sydney.
As one of the coordinators, Nita Lo points out: “We want to celebrate the many ways that Sydney residents are creating food security, saving money and the environment, while enjoying the health benefits of home-grown fruit and vegetables.”
Trail co-founder Bridget Kennedy said she got started with a potted lemon tree and growing herbs on a balcony but now has a garden fall of veggie beds and fruit trees as well as an aquaponic system where she breeds trout fingerlings and silver perch.
“There is nothing more satisfying than growing your own food and it’s so easy to learn how,” she said.
“Come along to this trail and chat to the growers; you’ll get so many fantastic ideas and see gardens at all stages of their journeys.”
All profits from the event go back into the community in the form of grants to schools and community groups for edible gardens.
Tickets for the Saturday, March 26, trail, 9am-2pm, cost from $5-$56 (family) and you can use your Dine and Discover voucher.
