Fastest growing girls sport

GIRLS from across the Inner West are picking up their bats, slipping into their whites and gearing up for a fun season of cricket.

Dozens of girls came to Marrickville Cricket Club’s Players’ Day on Saturday to practise their skills before the official start of the season in October.
The 109-year-old club now boasts a strong cricket program for girls with formats for players from five to 15 years.
Club President Antony Sachs says cricket is actually the fastest growing girls sport in the country and Marrickville is a local leader.
“We’ve got young girls playing for their first time and five-season veterans who are now playing representative and grade cricket. They love it!” Sachs said.
“Registrations are open and new players are very welcome. So give it a try!”
Early primary school girls can play Junior Blasters cricket on Saturday mornings. Primary school age kids can play the Girls-only Master Blaster format from 5.30pm-7pm on Friday evenings.
The club fields girls U11s, U13s and U15s teams that play a modified T20 game on Saturday afternoons with a focus on participation and fun.
Marrickville Cricket Club has placed a premium on the experience the girls get, with all coaches getting Cricket Australia training and support from the University Womens grade cricket club.
