While Sydney boasts the highest rugby union participation at all levels in Australia, Oatley Rugby Club is the only rugby club between Hurstville and Campbelltown, south of the Hume Highway.
With Oatley as its traditional name, the club is actually situated at H V Evatt Park, Lugarno, not far from the banks of the Georges River.
However, Oatley’s reach is far and wide with 65 per cent of their players coming from the Canterbury-Bankstown/Georges River area. In recognition of this and with this south-west representation, Oatley has taken to holding major events at Riverwood Park to showcase the availability and popularity of the sport.
The club provides rugby opportunities for all levels of players, from minis as young as five, juniors boys and senior (adult) sub-district players, and has ventured into girls rugby in a big way, now boasting one of the fastest growing girls rugby programs in Sydney.
The Club fields girls teams from u/11 to u/18 and is looking to move into senior female rugby.
Oatley club Director, Ross Bernays, says the club is working hard to promote rugby union further in the area and is keen to invite new and interested players to come and give rugby union ago.
“Oatley is positioning itself as the home of rugby union in the Georges River,” Bernays said.
“Rugby union is a sport for all ages, genders, shape and sizes. We draw players from a wide variety of sporting backgrounds and more and more we are seeing players combining both rugby league and rugby union.
“It is a truly world-wide game with opportunities to travel and enjoy the sport.”
