Family day for Bears of Hope

FINDING out your baby has not survived during pregnancy, birth or infancy may be the most traumatic experience you will ever experience.

You have lost a precious little life and you may need to lean on others, such as the counsellors at Bears of Hope, to cope with the heartbreak and the grief – which is exactly what helped get Picnic Point mum and dad Jessica and Basem Bastawrous through their dark days after losing two babies.
“We lost our first at 16 weeks in 2020 and at the end of last year, we had a stillborn at 22 weeks,” Jessica said.
“This was despite having two textbook pregnancies with our daughter Amelia, 8, and Alexander, 6 and after so many tests and specialists’ visits, they still can’t tell us why we lost our last two.”
She said the only good impression they had after the bad experiences were from charity Bears of Hope and she wanted to do all she could to ensure other parents enjoyed the same support.
With this in mind, she has organised a Family Fun Day charity fundraiser for the group and to create miscarriage awareness.
“Miscarriage is still a taboo subject but all we want is acknowledgement of the pregnancy and our baby; Bears of Hope counsellors have all been through the same experience,” Jessica said.
Featuring a fete-style atmosphere, the Family Fun Day will be held at Bankstown City Paceway on Saturday, October 14, 12-5pm.
“Bring the kids and enjoy a day of entertainment, face painting, jumping castles, live DJs, food trucks, petting zoo, pony rides, performers and a giant raffle,” she said.
