‘Fake doctor’ at hospital probe urged

A ‘FAKE doctor’ who worked at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital for the past eight months, has been removed, with a police investigation now underway.

There is also an internal investigation to find out how the 27-year-old woman, although “fully supervised” during her time, came to be employed at the hospital from January to August 2021.
A Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital spokesperson said the hospital discovered last Monday an employee was not registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
The spokesperson said the woman was immediately removed from her duties and the matter referred to police for investigation.
The hospital is also conducting an internal investigation and has reported the matter to AHPRA.
State MP for Bankstown, Tania Mihailuk, and the community are demanding answers as to how an unregistered ‘fake’ doctor was able to work at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital for eight months.
“It beggars belief that a person was able to pose as a doctor for eight months at a major hospital,” she said.
“It is a huge breach of trust and comes at a time when our community is still reeling from the horrible gas mix up that severely disabled one baby and cost the life of another.
“There is no doubt that this warrants a major, thorough investigation as to what went wrong here.”
Ms Mihailuk said she was looking for swift action which should include criminal sanctions for the person involved.
She said the outcome of the investigation must be made public as quickly as possible.
