Fairytales intertwine in hunt for happy end

IN the 35 years since its film premiere, ‘Into the Woods’ has become a classic – brilliantly original, dark, funny, absorbing and utterly entertaining and for the first time, will wow crowds at Bryan Brown Theatre in November.

It begins, of course, with “Once upon a time…” and by the end of the opening number, not one but multiple fairytale plots have intertwined as Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack of beanstalk fame all head into the woods in search of love, happiness and wisdom.
Their stories are all tied together by the classic tale involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has cursed them.
Three midnights of brilliant plot twists later, they all end up singing “Happy ever after” except this is only the interval … We all want our wishes fulfilled but are we prepared to pay the price?
Bankstown Theatre Company Director Dennis Clements said the show – November 3-12 – surpassed anything he’d seen or done before.
“It’s really an exciting show, everyone who sees it loves it and we’re blessed to have the most amazing cast,” he said.
“There was such a high standard of Bankstown performers auditioning that I could’ve cast the show twice with the talent who walked through the door.
“I’ve been blown away by our singers who are exceptional and fans of the movie, starring Meryl Streep, will be surprised how much more we can fit into stage musical.
“The message of the show too is extraordinarily funny with lots of life lessons for young and old.”
