The blaze broke out about 6.30am at the Clapham Road building and took almost two hours for more than 60 firefighters to extinguish.
As Fire and Rescue crews entered the building to attack the flames and confirm no-one was inside, an explosion – believed to have been caused by highly-flammable magnesium – rocked the building, injuring two firefighters and forcing others to retreat and fight the fire from a safe distance outside.
Both firies were taken to hospital with one suffering magnesium burns to his left forearm, while a third firefighter and a worker were assessed at the scene but did not require further treatment.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are now underway.
