Exhibition pushes people’s perceptions about textiles

A NEW exhibition pushing people’s perceptions about textiles and how they can be used in art practice has opened at the Granville Centre Art Gallery.

With everything from weaving to artworks printed digitally on silk, the ‘A Link, A Loop, A Circle – Visual Art Exhibition’ includes works by artists Elizabeth Pulie, Teelah George, Hayley Pigram, Areez Katki, Blake Lawrence, Rainbow Chan, Amy Claire Mills, Sue Jo Wright, Edwina Green, Kevina Jo Smith and Sayd Abdali in collaboration with Jane Théau, Nasaphah Nasaphah.
Curator Talia Smith said the starting point for the exhibition was the history of the Granville Centre site itself which in the past was home to a wool and textile factory.
“Plus in this beautiful diverse area that we are in, a lot of people come from cultures where handcrafts, are something that they have done for years and for generations,” she said.
She said while textiles are something that we use and see every day, the exhibition “will challenge what you think they can be in an exciting way”.
“So if you want to be surprised come along,” she said.
“It’s a very broad gamut of what textile can mean.
“We’ve even had a local group of knitters from Granville who are taking over our glass cabinet space out the front of the gallery with their creations.”
The exhibition can be viewed until July 4, and the Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday, 10am-4pm; Saturday and Sunday 11am-4pm.
