Seated exercise is an effective way to help you stay physically active, increasing blood flow, keeping joints lubricated and boosting your mood.
Dance Fit Sydney owner Tracie Murray, who has been running classes for all ages, including seniors, for nearly 30 years, is introducing her first ‘seated exercise’ class and says it’s the perfect opportunity for seniors who can’t stand up for long, to get out, have fun and improve fitness.
“Keeping the pressure off your joints, seated exercise strengthens muscles and bones, improves flexibility and balance and greatly reduces the risk of falls and injuries,” she said.
The class costing $6 will be on offer on Tuesdays, 10-11am, from August 23 in Panania Grace Christian Church.
Teaching nine other classes a week, Tracie says she is lucky to have her mum Sylvia teaching the general senior class every Friday, 9.30-10.30am, at Padstow Uniting Church Hall.
“At 76, mum is a great testament to the benefits of exercise and how it keeps you young,” she said.
“All my classes are low impact and easy to follow. We do salsa, rhumba and cha cha moves, it’s a bit like zumba.
“A lot of my students have gotten to know each other and make the most of their day out, enjoying a coffee or lunch together afterwards.”
The general class, costing $10, is held on Mondays, 6.30-7.30pm, at Padstow Uniting Church Hall.

Exercise while sitting down
WE often think of exercise as gruelling and having to stand for long periods but vigorous physical activity isn’t the only way to reap the benefits of exercise for seniors.
