Evacuated can’t return after unit building blaze

TWO fires only hours apart have destroyed a Punchbowl unit, damaged three others and caused significant damage to a house in Belfield.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) received numerous calls just before 11pm on Sunday that a top floor unit of a two-level block was well alight on Victoria Road in Punchbowl.
Crews searched the property and quickly got to work attacking the fire, knocking it down inside the unit but a check of the roof space found significant fire spreading into the common roof area.
About 15 residents self-evacuated, with one treated on scene by paramedics.
Due to concerns about the structural integrity of the building, residents have been unable to return to their homes.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
Soon after, about 2am the next morning, firefighters were called to Michael Avenue in Belfield, where they found thick smoke and flames in the front rooms of a house.
They worked to extinguish the blaze, while neighbouring residents were evacuated as a precaution.
Firies attacked the fire which spread through the roof but managed to contain it within 45 minutes. No-one was injured.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage from the vicinity of Michael Avenue, is urged to contact Campsie police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
