Enrich own world when you volunteer for elderly

YOU don’t get paid for it but it could lead to paid work down the track since when you volunteer, you pick up a wealth of skills and experience.

Volunteering also offers physical and mental health benefits and according Chester Hill volunteer Joanne Ware, you get as much out of it as the people you are assisting.
Joining Chester Hill Neighbourhood Centre (CHNC) about 11 years ago when she retired, Joanne volunteers on half a dozen occasions a month.
She shops for and visits two elderly women and accompanies other volunteers and clients on regular bus outings.
“We were just enjoying fish and chips today for lunch at La Perouse and we’re going to Cabramatta RSL next to see a show,” she said.
“I certainly get to visit places that I wouldn’t have if not for the volunteering.”
Joanne said it’s difficult not to develop a bond with your client, with the idea to provide support, companionship and practical help to the elderly who are socially isolated.
“You feel good because they are always so happy to see you and you realise the difference you are making in their lives,” she said.
“I would recommend the program to anyone considering doing volunteer work; it’s just so very rewarding personally.”
CHNC aged care coordinator, Selina Rogan, says they are presently recruiting volunteers who can spare as little as an hour a fortnight.
“Volunteers are provided with training, information and resources,” Ms Rogan said.
